Traces IV

The Fourth Biennale for Drawing in Israel, initiated by the Jerusalem Artists' House, has been held since 2001, and will spread out across five galleries in central Jerusalem. The concept for the present exhibition initially evolved from a dialogue with the three previous exhibitions, in which the state of contemporary drawing in Israel has been fully plotted: the diverse spectrum of themes, styles and techniques, indicated the abundant expressions of drawing and its validity as a major, vibrant medium with boundaries that today cross into new fields including installation, photography or literature. The catalogue accompanying "Traces IV" includes a selection of works by all of the artists and texts written by the curators.

On paper, canvas, wood, glass or even a computer screen: what one paints on is just as important as what and how one paints. Any surface can serve as support for a painting on which color, lines and forms merge into one whole. This interactive exhibition exposes children and adults to works of art executed on traditional as well as other kinds of support: traffic lights, leaves, stones, walls and the body. Children will have an opportunity to actually feel the various kinds of supports, in order to better understand how the material of the support affects the choice of medium and technique
